Nicola Parker
Nicola, a practice nurse, will be starting her MSc in Advanced Nursing practice in September 2011. This will enable her to work as an Advanced nurse Practitioner, alongside the doctors, seeing patients who need to be seen and treated on the day.
Undertaking the Advanced nurse Practitioner course enables nurses to extend their skills under the guidance and support of doctors. On completion of the course, they are able to see/diagnose and treat many different types of illnesses, they can also make referrals and prescribe any medications that are required.
Nurse Practitioners work in most GP surgeries now, and their role to is compliment that offered by the doctor, freeing up GP's to see patients with chronic health problems and complications which require medical advice and longer appointments.
You may see Nicola working in the urgent surgery, offering on the day appointments for coughs/flu/ear problems/tonsillitus/urine infections/gastorintestinal upset/womens' health issues/eye infections/rashes and unwell children. If Nicola feels that your problem cannot be dealt with and needs GP advice, then of course you will be seen by one of the doctors.
